Obituary

MR. CANDELA

Filippo Candela, founder and chairman of the board of Grande Cheese Co at Route 1, Brownsville, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 1980.  He was 89 years of age and resided in Lomira.

He was born in Montelepre, Palermo, Italy, on June 17, 1891.  A pioneer in the Italian cheese industry, Mr. Candela came to the United States in 1927, and was an instructor in the art of Italian cheese making.

Mr. Candela founded the Grande Cheese Co. in 1941, and was active in the business until his recent illness.

He was the recipient of various awards and was cited for exemplary services, leadership, contributions and guidance to improve the Italian cheese industry in the United States.  He received the honor of “Cavaliere Dell’ Ordine di Vittorio Veneto” form the Italian government.

Surviving are his wife, Providenza, with whom he observed his 55th wedding anniversary this week; a son, John of Fond du Lac; a daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Antoinette) Brinkman and two grandchildren all of Oshkosh; and a brother, Salvatore of Montelepre, Palermo, Italy.

A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.mm. Friday at Nativity of St. Mary’s Church, Lomira.  The Rev. John H. Goebel will officiate.

Friends of Mr. Candela may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Kietzer Funeral Home, Lomira.  A memorial has been established.
