JOHN J. EBERT
John Joseph Ebert, 54, of Byron, passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 202, at his home.
He was born on Feb. 15, 1948, in Green Bay, a son of Lloyd and Rosella White Ebert of Briarton.
On Nov. 22, 1982, he married Maureen Betz at Santa Fe, N. M.
After graduating from Sacred Heart Seminary in Oneida, John continued his education, earning undergraduate and advanced degrees in history and library science and in many specialized academic programs.
He took particular joy in being a member of the first graduating class of the National Archives Institute in Washington, D.C. These fields of study became the core of his professional career as library director in Anson County, N.C.; archivist for the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay, archivist for the Department of Defense in Albuquerque; and reference librarian at the UW-Fond du Lac and Marian College.
Among John’s body of research and publications were several on Wisconsin history. He collaborated with his wife on many local history projects. They were planning the development of a Byron History Center in the months before his death.
As a member of the Fond du Lac County Historical Society, John served as director of Adams Home Resource Center and spearheaded many of the group’s special projects. He also was a member of the
Wisconsin Historical Society, American Association for State and Local History, Society of
American Archivists and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
He also was a member of Sons of Zebedee (St. John’s) Catholic Church in Byron.
Survivors include his wife; one brother, Lee (Karen) Ebert of Gresham; his mother-in-law, Marion Betz of Fond du Lac; four sisters-in-law, Katherine Alexander of Albuquerque; Carolyn (Ron) Baeten of De Pere; Ellie (Jerry) Keaton of Ruidoso, N. M.; and Elizabeth (Glenn) Lampark of Racine; nieces and nephews, Sean (Patti) Ebert of Oconto, Sheila Ebert of East Lansing, MIch., David Miller of Portland, Oregon, Michelle Eiland of Albuquerque, Carrie (Dan McDonough of Hudson, John Baeten of Stevens Point, Jeri Ann Keeton of Ruidoso, N.M. Colin Lampark of Lexington, Ky., and Greg Lampark of Racine.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services: A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 27, 2002, at Sons of Zebedee (St. John’s) in Byron, with the Rev. James Posanski officiating. Inurnment will be at Byron Cemetery at a later date.
Visitation: At the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of services.
Memorials may be directed to St. Agnes Hospice Hope, the Fond du Lac County Historical Society or the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center.
John kept a plaque in his office with the following quote from Mark Twain: “Let us so endeavor to live that when it is we come to die that even the undertaker will be sorry.”
